Watermelon vs Strawberries for Dogs
Both watermelon and strawberries are safe dog treats. The most useful difference: strawberries have a substantially lower glycaemic index (around 40 vs 72 for watermelon), which matters for diabetic dogs and dogs on insulin therapy. Watermelon edges ahead for hydration on hot days.

Pick Strawberries When
- Your dog is diabetic or insulin-managed (lower GI)
- You want substantially more vitamin C and fibre
- Your dog needs anthocyanin antioxidants (skin and coat health)
- You want individual portion control (one strawberry is a discrete unit)
Pick Watermelon When
- Hot-day hydration is the priority
- Your dog needs the lowest calorie option (watermelon by a hair)
- Your dog has a strawberry allergy (rare but exists)
- You want lycopene specifically
Preparation Differences
Watermelon
Remove rind, remove black seeds, cube to breed size. Already covered in preparation guide.
Strawberries
Remove green tops (leaves and stem). Wash thoroughly. Halve or quarter for small dogs to reduce choke risk. Whole for medium and large dogs. Avoid commercial strawberry products which often contain xylitol or added sugar.
