Watermelon Ice Cube Tray Method

The cheapest and easiest way to prepare dog-friendly watermelon treats is the ice cube tray. No special moulds, no fancy ingredients, no thawing strategy: just blend, pour, freeze, store. This page covers tray-size matching, the protocol, and the troubleshooting for common issues.

Ice Cube Tray Sizes by Dog

Dog sizeTray typeCube size producedPer session
Toy (under 5 kg)Mini ice cube tray (silicone)1 cm cube1 to 2 cubes
Small (5 to 10 kg)Mini or small ice cube tray1.5 cm cube2 to 3 cubes
Medium (10 to 25 kg)Standard ice cube tray2 to 2.5 cm cube2 to 3 cubes
Large (25 to 40 kg)Large silicone mould3 cm cube2 to 3 cubes
Giant (40 kg+)Large silicone mould or muffin tin4 cm cube or muffin shape2 to 4 cubes

The Protocol

  1. 1Cube seedless watermelon flesh (rind off). About 200 to 300 g fills a standard 14-cube tray.
  2. 2Blend smooth, or leave chunky if your dog prefers texture and the cubes are larger than 2 cm.
  3. 3Pour into your chosen tray. Stop just below the brim because watermelon expands slightly on freezing.
  4. 4Tap the tray gently on the counter to remove air bubbles.
  5. 5Freeze for 4 to 6 hours until completely solid.
  6. 6Pop cubes out and transfer to a labelled freezer bag.
  7. 7Use within 3 months for best texture.

Variations

Plain watermelon cubes

Pour pureed seedless watermelon directly into the tray. Cleanest, lowest-calorie option.

Watermelon + Greek yogurt

2 parts watermelon to 1 part plain Greek yogurt. See yogurt mix recipe for full method and dairy notes.

Watermelon + coconut water

2 parts watermelon, 1 part plain unsweetened coconut water. Extra electrolyte support after long hot walks.

Watermelon + low-sodium bone broth

2 parts watermelon, 1 part dog-safe (low or no sodium) bone broth. Savoury treat that picky dogs often prefer.

Troubleshooting

Cubes won't pop out

Run the bottom of the tray under warm water for 10 seconds. Silicone trays release more easily than plastic.

Cubes turn brown

Freezer burn. Likely the cubes were not stored in an airtight bag. Discard and remake. Use within 3 months.

Dog ignores the cube

Hold a cube in your palm to thaw the outer surface slightly. Releases the smell. Try the yogurt or bone broth variant for picky dogs.
